This is a fascinating look at how education systems are stacked against boys. A couple of points I keyed into as an anarchist: one was the damage done by the zero tolerance policies and how it drives boys out of the classroom. The other was the fact that recently the number of elementary school male teachers has dropped by half. Now 93% of school teachers are women. I think this is due at least in part to our culture’s paranoia that has gotten to the point where shaking the sexual predator stigma becomes a serious issue for any man wanting to work with children, which ultimately harms the children more than anyone else.

Aside from the anarchistic points, there’s also some very interesting statistics on how boys have far more instances of ADHD and other social/psychological issues. Her argument is that they’re just being boys, and these statistics stem from problems in how we gauge proper behavior and our bias toward girl-type things in schools. Very interesting ideas that I’ve never really thought about before, but seem to fit with my own experiences back in grade school.
