Kalin’s PDF Creation Station WordPress Plugin

Build highly customizable PDF documents from any combination of pages and posts, or add a link to any page to download a PDF of that post.

Current Features:

Kalin’s PDF Creation Station will add two menus to your WordPress admin. One under tools and one under settings.

In the tools menu you will be able to build PDF documents from any combination of pages and posts. Select any or all pages and posts from your site, then add a custom title page, end page and custom headers. Adjust font sizes, file names, or insert information such as timestamps, excerpts and urls through the use of shortcodes. Finally, adjust page order through a simple drag and drop interface. All created PDF files will display in a convenient list for you to delete, download or link to.

In the settings menu you will be able to set up options for a link that can be automatically added to some or all pages and posts. This link will point  to an automatically generated PDF version of that page. Most of the same customization options are available here that are available in the creation tool, like title page and font size, as well as the option to fully customize the link itself. On individual page/post edit pages you will be able to override the default link placement so you can show links on some pages and not on others. PDF files are saved to your server so they only need to be created once, reducing server load compared to other PDF generation plugins that create a new PDF every time the link is clicked. The PDF file is automatically deleted when a page or post is edited, so the PDF always matches the page.

Notes:

As far as I know I implemented all of WordPress’ recommended security, compatibility and cleanup procedures. I don’t anticipate any problems, but still, use at your own risk.

——————

Installation:

1. Unzip `kalins-pdf-creation-station.zip` to the `/wp-content/plugins/` directory

2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

3. Find the PDF Creation Station menu under ‘tools’ and begin creating custom PDF documents of your website. Or go into the PDF Creaction Station menu under ‘settings’ and begin setting up the options for automatic individual page generation.

    Hi Kalin

I am trying to install your plugin on a friends website : http://www.agencecontinentale.com
I have a problem. I use Contempo RealEstate 4 Theme and I can’t display images in the pdf generated by your plug-in as you can see there : http://www.agencecontinentale.com/listings/4-pieces-au-seaside-plazza/
    Any idea ?
    Thank you

    Hi Kalin,

Really nice work on this plugin, love that you use “in-house” generation of PDF rather than relying on external services, that’s a big plus in my book.
When did you last update this plugin? On WordPress.org it says it was last updated like two years ago. Do you keep some other repository someplace else where you do updates to it?

    Faithfully, and best wishes,
    k0nsl

    • Kalin says:

Yeah, I felt that using the TCPDF engine was a better choice than using a third party API since it would require fewer updates and have fewer points of failure. The big drawback to that, however, is that TCPDF doesn’t get updated automatically, and since I haven’t updated this plugin in two years, the engine is now two years out of date.
Nope, there’s no other repository. This is it. I just don’t have the time to maintain and improve this. I think a serious bug has crept in too with WP updates that causes problems with images.
So if anyone wants to take over this project and claim it as their own, please feel free, like what happened with my Post List plugin which became Advanced Post List. I could probably give up a few hours to help anyone who’s dedicated to continuing this plugin.

    Hello Kalin,

the “Run other plugin shortcodes, and content filters” option works well most of the time. I have installed a plugin called SubHeading http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subheading/
Unfortunately the PDFs do not display the subheading. Have you got any ideas how I could get PDF Creation Station to include this?

    Thanks

thx in advance for ur help!

  5. stein says:

    Hi Kalin,

I was able to display the latest image of the gallery in my pdf! Can you tell me how I can get rid of the page 1/1 in the footer?

    Thanks

  6. stein says:

Hi Kalin, thanks for this wonderful plugin. The only thing that’s not working for me is the images. I don’t use the featured image in my theme, but I do use the images that are in the gallery of a post. Is there any way to show these or one of these?

  7. Ron says:

Dang I thought I finally found a solution, but I can’t get it to work.

I hit create PDF! button and it says it’s building pdf, but nothing ever comes up. I’ve let it sit for over an hour. No errors showing or anything.

Tried it on two blogs, one has 750 posts, the other 550 posts. Is that too much for the plug-in? Something I might be doing wrong?

I am trying to go from blog to Word DOC, thought I could do PDF, then in to DOC. But no luck getting a pdf.

Looks like such a great plug-in. I’ve searched everywhere and can’t get from blog to DOC. I’d be happy with PDF right now :)

Thank you for creating the plug-in though, sure many happy people. Wish I could get it to work.

    • Kalin says:

Yeah, the maximum number of posts that the plugin can handle will vary depending on your server memory, CPU and PHP settings, as well as the options you’ve selected. Images specifically can slow down processing. Mine starts failing around 100 posts, though I am using goDaddy, which is far from the best. I did insert a 30-second timeout per post in the plugin, so if you multiply the number of posts by 30 seconds, then wait that amount of time and it still hasn’t worked, then you know it failed, but I would be surprised if it would ever actually work for 550 posts in one shot.
But you could do it in batches of 100 posts, then easily copy and paste the whole thing into a Word doc. You’d have to do that 6 or 8 times per blog, but it could be done.

  8. ftanil says:

I have lots of pages with code snippets in it (and using the http://www.viper007bond.com/wordpress-plugins/syntaxhighlighter/). When I generate PDF for those pages, the codes are stripped from there. Is this a setting issue ?

    • Kalin says:

Hi, sorry it took so long. I haven’t been too good about supporting this thing lately :)
It might be a settings issue, like you may just need to check the box to allow other plugins to run their code… or it might just be not playing nice with the plugin you’re using.

  9. Dante says:

I didn’t get a notification that my comment was posted so here it is a test :) I hope you don’t mind

  10. Dante says:

Hey Kalin! Congratulations for a GREAT plugin! It works like a charm!

I have a question, though. Is it possible to get custom taxonomies instead of the regular category for posts?
I have in my site a custom post type (‘project’) and a custom category for them (‘project-category’) but I tried using [post_categories delimeter=", " links="true"] and it’s not working.

Trying to work on it myself, I tried with get_the_terms() and get_the_terms() functions but I’m not quite sure how to get this accomplished.

Can you give me a hand with this?

    Thanks!

    • Dante says:

Oh, just to let you know: I will not be using the regular categories, so if the solution for this involves changing or removing the regular categories feature, it’s fine for me :)

      Thanks in advance!

    • Kalin says:

No, I’m sorry (and sorry it took so long to reply). I never got around to adding support for custom taxonomies as those were added to WordPress near the end of my development on this plugin. It seems like it wouldn’t be too difficult to add in though.

  11. Graeme says:

    Hi excellent plugin.

I am particularly interested in the back end side. ‘Tools > PDF Creation Station’, where you can select the posts and reorder them. I want to offer this to my premium subscribers.

I’ve already created a function for them to save posts into folders (screenshot here: http://tinypic.com/r/i2k4xv/6). I then want to apply your plugin to PDF these saved posts. When the user click download this will pull up the dialog box where you can reorder the posts.

I’m sure I can customise it enough to get it to work but I want to know if it is possible to push this functionality to the front end user.

    Thanks
    Graeme

    • Kalin says:

I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about this in other comments scattered across this site, but for some reason the search feature here doesn’t work for comments :(
I thought about adding this kind of feature I think. It seems like you could hack it, too, by pulling out the sections of the admin and showing them to the user.

  12. Jen says:

Hi, Loving your plugin, thanks so much for your hard work. Everything is working well except images, it simply won’t render them at all and throws out this error

TCPDF ERROR: [Image] Unable to get image: http://www.jessiesfund.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Graphic-score-1-300×195.png

Any ideas what could be causing this, or if there’s an easy fix?

    Many thanks

    Jen

    • Sebastiaan says:

      Hi all.

Well let me echo the abundant praise for this great plug-in, firstly.

But I have the same problem as Jen here: consistently, any PDF with an image generates an error, TCPDF ERROR: [Image] Unable to get image: [URL follows here]
Without fail, the image itself loads fine when that URL is pasted into a browser. PDFs get created from text-only pages without trouble.

I have scoured and scoured the web, to no avail. Some tips seem to suggest this is related to folder permissions on the server. I’ve contacted my host, but they refer me back to WP and the plug-in provider. So, does anyone know how to address this problem? When I run WP locally on my Mac (MAMP) it does not occur; but on the live site hosted with Hostpapa, it does occur.

I’d be so grateful for your advice!

      Very best, Sebastiaan

    • Kalin says:

I have seen this error once or twice myself and was never able to figure out what was going on. I think I was able to solve it by deleting the image and uploading a new one, but obviously you can’t do that with all your images and if they’re all broken that probably wouldn’t fix it anyway.
All I can think is that it it’s a permissions thing, but perhaps permissions set on the individual images, or perhaps it has something to do with the encoding of the image that PHP or TCPDF doesn’t like processing.

  13. Johnny says:

hey guys, nice plugin. when i put [blog_description] by itself on the html title section and everything else empty, once i create the pdf, each blog post has alot of space around it, i’ve tried wrapping it with some css but no luck. Is there a css file i need to look at? All i want is to fit alot blog post with small font in one page.

  14. Saul says:

Hey kalin, one question reguarding your pdf creator, is it possible to turn the page virtically? i would like my content to show on landscape mode on one side so i can fold the paper sorta like a book. Ive been looking through the files but cant seem to find what to remove or add to achieve this.

    Thanks

  15. Paul says:

Hi Kalin, first thanks for your awesome plugin!
I would like to know if it is possible to add the categories in the TOC page? Would be like a title and above you get the post’s title. Thanks!

    • Kalin says:

No, there’s nothing built-in that would allow you to automatically put categories into the TOC. You might be able to hack the source and get it to work though.

      • Paul says:

Ok thanks i’ll do that then :) Gona take some time!

      • Paul says:

Hi kalin! I succeded in doing what i wanted! In fact instead of using the function addtoc() you need to use addHTMLtoc(), create some bookmarks template for the highlight results and then change the level of the bookmark (example 59 of tcpdf). I had to change the original order the post were displayed too so that they were listed by categories and subcategories. If anyone is interested let me know :) And by the way kalin in one of your topic to change the display order, you wrote: Replace order type with any of these possible values: ‘category’ – Sort by the numeric category IDs.
This doesn’t work :/ had to play with 3 loops to get the right order.
Regards :) and thanks again for your plugin!

      • Kalin says:

Dang, I’ve been bad lately about answering these posts. This was a good one, too. I’d love to get a copy of what you did and hopefully I’ll have time to go through it and make a post about it so that others can use it.
It’s been so long since I’ve actually done anything with these plugins that it gets harder and harder for me to remember how they work.

  16. Robi says:

Hi Kalin, sorry for my english but I’m italian and I don’t write many times in english. We’ve tried your work for PDF generator only one time and all then team find it wonderfull but, after the first time, it seems not working.
I explain: in administrator panel we check one or more articles, with default options, ad click on ‘create now!’ link.
Under this line appear then message for the work in progress and… nothig else; we have tried to wait for some hours and only one or two articles but nothig.
I have removed and after reinstalled the plugin but It stop at the same point.
Our wp is 3.1 versione with waver theme, and pdf for visitor is disabled, we’re trying from the admin panel.
It’ possible that a permission for some directories on the server stop it?
    Thanks.

This is the error that I can find in log file on the server, but I’ don’t understand why there is this error.
      Thaks.

      • Kalin says:

Yeah, I don’t know off the top of my head. Maybe your pages are rather large and the backend just cant handle it. Have you tried not including images? I think I have a timeout set to 30 seconds per post, so if you multiply the number of posts by 30 that’s the maximum number of seconds it’ll take. Anything beyond that and you know something is wrong. It does tend to conk out when it got to around 100 posts for me, though I’m sure that depends on how big or complex the posts are. Let me know if you figure anything out.

      • Robi says:

Hi Kalin, I’ve find where was the error: in cache dir of the pluging there was one aborted process that was con cleared from code.
When I kill and create again that folder the error goes awy.
        (Sorry form my english).
Now It’s all ok. Thank you.

      • Robi says:

ehm ‘con cleared’ was ‘not cleared’ :) )

  17. Alex says:

    Hi Kalin,

    great work.
Is it possible to give the PDF only registered users?

  18. Great tool!

I am archiving all postings in order to create ebooks for download. This tool saves me a lot of time. It works while I have dinner. Thanks!

  19. Tom says:

    Hi,
thx for the plugin. I have two questions
    1. how can I delete the page between toc and the other posts/pages?
    2. how to float the text around an image?
    Thanks

    • Kalin says:

I think that to delete that page you would need to hack the source. I can’t quite remember if I’m injecting that page on purpose or maybe it’s built-in to the TCPDF rendering engine, or if it’s because your TOC is exactly one page long and it interprets a blank line as a new page.

As for image floats, this is something that frustrated the hell out of me too. Maybe TCPDF has come out with some upgrades in the last year or two that could make this happen.

(If anyone notices improvements by swapping out newer versions of TCPDF please let me know and I might take the time to do an update to this plugin.)

      Sorry I couldn’t be more help :(
Oh, and sorry I took so long to reply. It looks like this got lost in my email for a while.

  20. MsManiya says:

    Hi,

How do I make changes in the CSS of h1, h2 and h3??? where are they located I need bigger headings in the pdf

    • Kalin says:

You have to use inline CSS in the before HTML section and just code it by hand. I don’t think it’ll be able to link out to any external stylesheets. Sorry I don’t really have any templates or anything.

  21. Hi Kalin,

Will this plugin work for WP 3.2.1 ? I have a requirement in which , any PDF which is given for download, needs to be edited on the fly such that the logged in user’s username and other details be printed in the last page and then given for download.

Is there a way to achieve this ?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sanu

    • Kalin says:

I’m still using it on the most recent WordPress update and I haven’t heard any complaints. I assume if it didn’t work I’d be hearing about it :)
As far as users details and what not, no it doesn’t sound like you can do that directly through the interface, but it might not be too hard to hack the source and get it to work if you know PHP. You’d just have to turn off the caching of the PDF’s and then find where it’s inserting the final page and add in the information you need.

  22. Terrence says:

    Hey there,

First off, this is a great plugin. But here’s an issue I’m having. I use some custom shortcodes, like [modal]A modal link{/modal], etc. Obviously, I don’t want the [modal] showing up in the generated pdf. Is there a setting I can use that will stop that from happening?

I noticed that the SVN version of the plugin sounds like it includes a regex filter. Maybe that would do the job?

Thanks for your work on this. My boss is going to be really happy when I show him :-)

    • Kalin says:

Did you try checking, “Run other plugin shortcodes” in the admin page? Yes, I am using regex to find the internal plugin shortcodes, but that checkbox should turn on shortcodes from other plugins.

      • Terrence says:

        Hi Kalin,

I’ve tried that checkbox, following the advice you gave to others, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

One issue might be that the shortcodes I am using are not implemented as part of a plugin. I just directly register them in a php file I include as part of my theme’s header.php.

This may not be standard WordPress practice, or even good WordPress practice! But I’m coming at WordPress as a PHP programmer used to working in a more flexible framework, so it made sense (at the time) just to register my shortcodes in the easiest place, without making use of the plugin architecture WordPress may provide.

Would the fact that I register my shortcodes in this way have something to do with what’s going on?

      • Kalin says:

Yeah, that’s probably the issue. There was some specific built-in WordPress call that I was making to trigger all plugins to run their shortcode functions. If your shortcode processing was somewhere else then it most likely wouldn’t be running.
I’d recommend one of two things:
        1) You could simply copy-paste the code you already have into my plugin source at the appropriate place. I don’t plan on updating the plugin any time soon unless a new WordPress release causes bugs.
        2) You could turn your shortcode processing into a plugin. This is probably the better solution in the long run as it’s going to reduce potential conflicts in the future. I found the WordPress plugin architecture actually pretty easy to work with as long as you remember the documentation is not always correct the details :)

      • Terrence says:

        Hi Kalin,

I moved things over to a very simple plugin — what do you know! It worked great!

Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to let you know.

      • Kalin says:

Sweet, great to hear it. The WordPress architecture I found to be pretty well designed compared to many other systems I’ve worked in.

  23. MsManiya says:

    Hello,

I am getting this error for few documents

    {“fileName”:”creating-a-class-museum.pdf”,”date”:”2012-04-18 06:32:57″,”status”:”problem creating pages and posts. Perhaps there’s a problem with one of the pages you’ve selected or with the before or after HTML.”}

    • Kalin says:

That’s an error that I’m spitting out. It probably means that the TCPDF engine couldn’t interpret your HTML. If I remember correctly, the engine requires reasonably well-formatted code. I’d recommend running the pages through a syntax checker and see if you have any HTML errors that the browser might be forgiving about but stricter interpreters will blow up on.

  24. MsManiya says:

    Hello,

I am getting too much extra spacing in my few post pdf documents what could be the possible reason

    • Kalin says:

Usually extra whitespace I’ve seen as a result of images and TCPDF not handling them quite properly. I haven’t found a good solution other than turning images off. Otherwise you may have some issues with your HTML. Or I think in a few occasions it’ll skip a whole page if the previous post just happens to end right on the last line of the previous page.

      • MsManiya says:

I had turned the images off, but still I am getting too much extra space, What could be the possible reason now???

      • Kalin says:

I don’t know. You’ll have to be more specific, like where in the page is the spacing having a problem and how are you expecting it to look? Is it on single posts or only when you compile multiple posts? Is it between posts, between paragraphs or between the header and the content? Does it happen on a few pages or all of them? Can you link to one of the generated PDF’s and its corresponding blog post(s) so I can take a look?

      • MsManiya says:

It usually comes randomly between paragraphs and in single posts

  25. Sefo says:

    Hello, thanks for the plugin.
My question is how can I use a template tag to place the link on a page?
For example, I need to place it on a custom taxonomy template.
    Thanks!

  26. MsManiya says:

  27. [...] das WordPress-Plugin “Kalin’s PDF Creation Station” entdeckt. Damit lassen sich ganze Blogs oder einzelne Artikel in PDFs [...]

  28. Tonya says:

I really love this plugin’s features and customizability! One question: footnotes generated through the wp-footnotes plugin don’t seem to appear in the PDF that results. I would really like to use this plugin, because it can be customized to display really everything we want to display; but, without the footnotes, the posts are incomplete. Any ideas? Here’s the site at issue. Thanks!

    • Kalin says:

Do you have “and content filters” checked in the admin? That should theoretically set it so other plugins run their filters on the content before building the PDF, though obviously with all the inconsistencies in plugins, it isn’t going to work for everything.

      • Tonya says:

Ah, yes–that was it! Another little question, regarding spacing in the generated PDF. If you take a look at this one–http://www.aphrabehn.org/ABO/wp-content/plugins/kalins-pdf-creation-station/kalins_pdf_create.php?singlepost=po_46, you’ll see that extra page breaks are added in the works cited information at the end. Any ideas about how I can get rid of them? Thank you so much for your help–this is a great plugin!

      • Kalin says:

Yeah, that’s been an issue. Probably the most annoying bug I had when developing this and I never did figure it out. It usually would insert an extra page after an image, but did it inconsistently. I think it’s an issue with the TCPDF engine and the way it interprets the HTML. You could try updating the TCPDF source that comes with the plugin as it’s probably been upgraded since my last release. Maybe they fixed this. You should just be able to drop a new version into the same directory as I didn’t alter anything in the engine.
You could also try playing with some of the HTML near the end of the post or in the plugin output if that’s what it’s trying to render. Maybe there’s some extra line breaks or something. If you figure anything out, please let me know as I’d love to get this fixed.

  29. tom says:

FYI’s TCPDF, and therefore this plugin, supports the ‘pagebreak’ attribute for HTML tags and CSS properties ‘page-break-before’ and ‘page-break-after’. For example you can use . Helped me out when searching for “page break”.

  30. PFF says:

    Hi, Kalin!

Your plugin is the most elegant PDF creation ever!

But I’m using the Thesis theme and the post images are a custom field. They aren’t displayed at the PDF.

    Can I fix this issue?

    • Kalin says:

Yeah, if the theme doesn’t use the built-in featured image wordpress feature, the [post_thumb] shortcode doesn’t work. You might be able to get it to work if you use the [post_meta name="custom_field_name"] shortcode which will give you the custom field you specify. Hopefully that would give you an image URL which you can wrap in an image tag.

  31. Mladen says:

hey, your plugin is really useful. Its bad that you don’t get much from donations but you made small contribution for future programmers to write open source code :)
Anyway i installed this plugin but can’t see first tab “select pages and posts”
could you help me how to activate that?

    • kalin says:

Hi thanks for trying it out. Sorry I’m not familiar with the issue you’re seeing. Could be a bug only you are seeing and if so I can put some time into fixing it but ill need some more info. A screenshot would help a lot. It could also be that you’re looking at the settings page when you want to be looking at the tools page. This plugin adds two different admin pages.

    Hi,

I am looking for some guidance on a slightly different direction of your plugin. I need to have a form on a website (say company information) that automatically fills out and generates a pre-made pdf (say with company logo and product information).

An example of what I am trying to do is here:

    http://www.premiereadmix.com/certification/index.html

However, I don’t want to use flash or any of that.

Is there anyway to accomplish this task with your plugin, or do you think you would be able to help develop something? I’d be happy to pay for your time.

    Thanks

Hi, sorry my reply took so long. My email box kinda got overflowed :) Anyway, sorry I can’t really help you out with this myself, as I already work too much at my regular job. It does seem like you should be able to hack the plugin, pull the forms out of the admin pages and pop them into a user facing page, but it would take a bit of hacking. Let me know if you come up with anything.

    Hi there Kalin,

You have a great plugin and the makings of an indespensible one!

Are you currently developing or are you ‘on a break’ from dev?

    Cheers!

    Felixius

Yeah, I’ve pretty much quit all forward development on my WordPress plugins, unless I find something new I want to add for my own website. I have been trying to provide support for them and will need to keep them updated as new WP versions come out, but for the most part I’m done with them.

I kinda decided that for my coding projects I’m doing on my own time, I should be doing something that can eventually make me a little money. I think I’ve had maybe two people donate twenty bucks so far for all my WP plugins combined.

Right now I’m working on a FaceBook word comedy game… well, I was working on it but I’m kinda caught up with my job in porn at the moment so I’m taking a break from that as well.
…actually …to be honest, I kinda built these WP plugins at my last job when they had nothing for me to do, so I did in a way get paid to build them :) My new job, however, expects me to actually work on their projects all day long.

If I understand correctly after running your message through a translator, you’re looking for info on special character sets, specifically N’KO characters. I’m not sure how well it’ll work for you but all the information I have on this is in this post: using foreign characters sets. You may need to update the version of TCPDF and run through their character set documentation.

    Hi Kalin,

Can you please explain better how I can have the featured image appear in the pdf. Is it possible to arrange the photo galleries to appear in the pdf ?
    Thanks

    • Kalin says:

Use [post_thumb], which outputs the url of the featured image. Just wrap that in an image tag. Remember the featured image must be specifically set on the edit page of the post. It doesn’t just grab an image out of the post.
