## Current Features:

In the tools menu you will be able to build PDF documents from any combination of pages and posts. Select any or all pages and posts from your site, then add a custom title page, end page and custom headers. Adjust font sizes, file names, or insert information such as timestamps, excerpts and urls through the use of shortcodes. Finally, adjust page order through a simple drag and drop interface. All created PDF files will display in a convenient list for you to delete, download or link to.

## Notes:

As far as I know I implemented all of WordPress’ recommended security, compatibility and cleanup procedures. I don’t anticipate any problems, but still, use at your own risk.

——————

## Installation:

1. Unzip kalins-pdf-creation-station.zip to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory

2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

3. Find the PDF Creation Station menu under ‘tools’ and begin creating custom PDF documents of your website. Or go into the PDF Creaction Station menu under ‘settings’ and begin setting up the options for automatic individual page generation.

Hello,
I would like to use your plugin. When the option “Include images” is off, the creation seems ok.
But when enabling then the following message appears:
Warning: imagecreatefrompng … [function.imagecreatefrompng]: failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 401 Authorization Required in /…/kalins-pdf-creation-station/tcpdf/tcpdf.php on line 7007

Best regards
Jörg

3. I clicked the “Include Images” option but when I create the PDF the images from the page are not there, otherwise it works great. Can someone explain what I need to do in the Plug In dashboard to make sure the images from the page also appear on the PDF.
thank you

4. Roger says:

Hello all,

May I know how to select pages or posts as shown in the screenshots ?

Thank you so much in advance,

R

5. Kalin,
Love that you created this. Is there a way to invoke it dynamically? The use case would be that visitors browse and indicate content (I may use a filtrify list of posts) and then invoke the PDF creation of those dynamically chosen posts.

Is possible??

Thanks again!

6. Michael says:

Hey there, i really love your plugin!

is there a way to remove the image-link from the pdf?

so that images in the PDF are not clickable and linked to the image on my server?

keep up the great work!

michael

1. I didn’t realize they were doing that. I’m not sure what you would do about it. Turning off the links in the original posts would do it. Or maybe there are different ways of inserting images into posts? I don’t actually have many images on my blog so I’m not familiar with it. The only other way I can think of is add a regex into the source code of the plugin to strip the link out of your html.

7. Mike says:

Hi,
Thanks for a very helpful plugin – I’d like to add support for custom fields as all my data is in custom fields and custom post types. Could you tell me the best way to pull in custom field data?

Thanks again

1. Hi Mike. I have been meaning to add custom post support for a long time now. Hopefully will have time in a couple weeks. For custom fields, however, you should be able to already display those using the post_meta shortcode.

8. Hi
Can you tell me please where i can link to an external stylesheet.
I know this can be done with tcpdf but i dont know where to add the link.
I dont want my client to have to deal with inline css etc.
Thanks

1. I’ve never done this but I would think you could do it in the title page. If not you may need to hack the plugin source code. I would be interested to hear your findings as maybe I should add specific support for this.

9. Hi

I like your plugin. Im using it on a site Im building for a property listings website.

I would like to be able to list 2 posts per page, is this possible?

Thanks.

1. Sorry, I’m not really clear on what you’re asking. Do you want to link to a PDF of a different page? If so you can just go to that page and copy the url of its PDF into a link.

1. Anonymous says:

When using automatic page breaks, the output generated results in one post / page per printed page.
I’m am trying to recreate a clients current brochure which has two items per printed page, created in ms word. Thus I’m using your plugin to generate the same from wp posts and pages.

In addition, I am adding some short codes to support custom fields, and a taxonomy filter in the admin section perhaps this could be an option for a future update.

2. I’m not really sure what you can do other than turning off page breaks and inserting spacers to try and get them all to render two to a page. Or you could splice together pdfs with anothet program, or maybe you could hack the source code of the plugin. But it wasn’t designed to do that out of the box.

10. Hi, thanks for the plugin, i know its “old” but i would love to use it but i need some help

I moved the wp-config file outside the webroot so your script can not find it, if i change the location in kalins_pdf_create.php

then i get an error about wp-settings

Can u help or did u leave this plugin?

Thanks Martin

11. Hi Kalin,

Really nice work on this plugin, love that you use “in-house” generation of PDF rather than relying on external services, that’s a big plus in my book.
When did you last update this plugin? On WordPress.org it says it was last updated like two years ago. Do you keep some other repository someplace else where you do updates to it?

Faithfully, and best wishes,
k0nsl

1. Yeah, I felt that using the TCPDF engine was a better choice than using a third party API since it would require fewer updates and have fewer points of failure. The big drawback to that, however, is that TCPDF doesn’t get updated automatically, and since I haven’t updated this plugin in two years, the engine is now two years out of date.
Nope, there’s no other repository. This is it. I just don’t have the time to maintain and improve this. I think a serious bug has crept in too with WP updates that causes problems with images.
So if anyone wants to take over this project and claim it as their own, please feel free, like what happened with my Post List plugin which became Advanced Post List. I could probably give up a few hours to help anyone who’s dedicated to continuing this plugin.

12. Damian says:

Hello Kalin,

the “Run other plugin shortcodes, and content filters” option works well most of the time. I have installed a plugin called SubHeading http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subheading/
Unfortunately the PDFs do not display the subheading. Have you got any ideas how I could get PDF Creation Station to include this?

Thanks

1. No, sorry, if you’ve played with those two checkboxes, those are the only ways it has to work with other plugins out-of-the box.

13. wa gre says:

hi every body
i am a new user of this fabulous plugin but i an looking for a little and simple customization, and i don’t find the solution…
i need to delete the page number i the footer of my pdf but i don’t know how to do that… someone could help me please?
thx in advance for ur help!

14. stein says:

Hi Kalin,

I was able to display the latest image of the gallery in my pdf! Can you tell me how I can get rid of the page 1/1 in the footer?

Thanks

15. stein says:

Hi Kalin, thanks for this wonderful plugin. The only thing that’s not working for me is the images. I don’t use the featured image in my theme, but I do use the images that are in the gallery of a post. Is there any way to show these or one of these?

16. Dang I thought I finally found a solution, but I can’t get it to work.

I hit create PDF! button and it says it’s building pdf, but nothing ever comes up. I’ve let it sit for over an hour. No errors showing or anything.

Tried it on two blogs, one has 750 posts, the other 550 posts. Is that too much for the plug-in? Something I might be doing wrong?

I am trying to go from blog to Word DOC, thought I could do PDF, then in to DOC. But no luck getting a pdf.

Looks like such a great plug-in. I’ve searched everywhere and can’t get from blog to DOC. I’d be happy with PDF right now

Thank you for creating the plug-in though, sure many happy people. Wish I could get it to work.

1. Yeah, the maximum number of posts that the plugin can handle will vary depending on your server memory, CPU and PHP settings, as well as the options you’ve selected. Images specifically can slow down processing. Mine starts failing around 100 posts, though I am using goDaddy, which is far from the best. I did insert a 30-second timeout per post in the plugin, so if you multiply the number of posts by 30 seconds, then wait that amount of time and it still hasn’t worked, then you know it failed, but I would be surprised if it would ever actually work for 550 posts in one shot.
But you could do it in batches of 100 posts, then easily copy and paste the whole thing into a Word doc. You’d have to do that 6 or 8 times per blog, but it could be done.

1. Thanks for the reply Kalin. That’s a thought, maybe I’ll try that.

1. Hi, sorry it took so long. I haven’t been too good about supporting this thing lately
It might be a settings issue, like you may just need to check the box to allow other plugins to run their code… or it might just be not playing nice with the plugin you’re using.

17. I didn’t get a notification that my comment was posted so here it is a test I hope you don’t mind

18. Hey Kalin! Congratulations for a GREAT plugin! It works like a charm!

I have a question, though. Is it possible to get custom taxonomies instead of the regular category for posts?
I have in my site a custom post type (‘project’) and a custom category for them (‘project-category’) but I tried using [post_categories delimeter=", " links="true"] and it’s not working.

Trying to work on it myself, I tried with get_the_terms() and get_the_terms() functions but I’m not quite sure how to get this accomplished.

Can you give me a hand with this?

Thanks!

1. Oh, just to let you know: I will not be using the regular categories, so if the solution for this involves changing or removing the regular categories feature, it’s fine for me

2. No, I’m sorry (and sorry it took so long to reply). I never got around to adding support for custom taxonomies as those were added to WordPress near the end of my development on this plugin. It seems like it wouldn’t be too difficult to add in though.

19. Graeme says:

Hi excellent plugin.

I am particularly interested in the back end side. ‘Tools > PDF Creation Station’, where you can select the posts and reorder them. I want to offer this to my premium subscribers.

I’ve already created a function for them to save posts into folders (screenshot here: http://tinypic.com/r/i2k4xv/6). I then want to apply your plugin to PDF these saved posts. When the user click download this will pull up the dialog box where you can reorder the posts.

I’m sure I can customise it enough to get it to work but I want to know if it is possible to push this functionality to the front end user.

Thanks
Graeme

I thought about adding this kind of feature I think. It seems like you could hack it, too, by pulling out the sections of the admin and showing them to the user.

1. Sebastiaan says:

Hi all.

Well let me echo the abundant praise for this great plug-in, firstly.

But I have the same problem as Jen here: consistently, any PDF with an image generates an error, TCPDF ERROR: [Image] Unable to get image: [URL follows here]
Without fail, the image itself loads fine when that URL is pasted into a browser. PDFs get created from text-only pages without trouble.

I have scoured and scoured the web, to no avail. Some tips seem to suggest this is related to folder permissions on the server. I’ve contacted my host, but they refer me back to WP and the plug-in provider. So, does anyone know how to address this problem? When I run WP locally on my Mac (MAMP) it does not occur; but on the live site hosted with Hostpapa, it does occur.

Very best, Sebastiaan

2. I have seen this error once or twice myself and was never able to figure out what was going on. I think I was able to solve it by deleting the image and uploading a new one, but obviously you can’t do that with all your images and if they’re all broken that probably wouldn’t fix it anyway.
All I can think is that it it’s a permissions thing, but perhaps permissions set on the individual images, or perhaps it has something to do with the encoding of the image that PHP or TCPDF doesn’t like processing.

20. Johnny says:

hey guys, nice plugin. when i put [blog_description] by itself on the html title section and everything else empty, once i create the pdf, each blog post has alot of space around it, i’ve tried wrapping it with some css but no luck. Is there a css file i need to look at? All i want is to fit alot blog post with small font in one page.

21. Saul says:

Hey kalin, one question reguarding your pdf creator, is it possible to turn the page virtically? i would like my content to show on landscape mode on one side so i can fold the paper sorta like a book. Ive been looking through the files but cant seem to find what to remove or add to achieve this.

Thanks

1. Saul says:

Thanks for pointing that out kalin.

22. Paul says:

Hi Kalin, first thanks for your awesome plugin!
I would like to know if it is possible to add the categories in the TOC page? Would be like a title and above you get the post’s title. Thanks!

1. No, there’s nothing built-in that would allow you to automatically put categories into the TOC. You might be able to hack the source and get it to work though.

1. Paul says:

Ok thanks i’ll do that then Gona take some time!

2. Paul says:

Hi kalin! I succeded in doing what i wanted! In fact instead of using the function addtoc() you need to use addHTMLtoc(), create some bookmarks template for the highlight results and then change the level of the bookmark (example 59 of tcpdf). I had to change the original order the post were displayed too so that they were listed by categories and subcategories. If anyone is interested let me know And by the way kalin in one of your topic to change the display order, you wrote: Replace order type with any of these possible values: ‘category’ – Sort by the numeric category IDs.
This doesn’t work :/ had to play with 3 loops to get the right order.
Regards and thanks again for your plugin!

3. Dang, I’ve been bad lately about answering these posts. This was a good one, too. I’d love to get a copy of what you did and hopefully I’ll have time to go through it and make a post about it so that others can use it.
It’s been so long since I’ve actually done anything with these plugins that it gets harder and harder for me to remember how they work.

23. Hi Kalin, sorry for my english but I’m italian and I don’t write many times in english. We’ve tried your work for PDF generator only one time and all then team find it wonderfull but, after the first time, it seems not working.
I explain: in administrator panel we check one or more articles, with default options, ad click on ‘create now!’ link.
Under this line appear then message for the work in progress and… nothig else; we have tried to wait for some hours and only one or two articles but nothig.
I have removed and after reinstalled the plugin but It stop at the same point.
Our wp is 3.1 versione with waver theme, and pdf for visitor is disabled, we’re trying from the admin panel.
It’ possible that a permission for some directories on the server stop it?
Thanks.

1. ” PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 262144 bytes) in /web/htdocs/–mysite–/home/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/kalins-pdf-creation-station/tcpdf/unicode_data.php on line 16529, referer: http://–mysite–/wordpress/wp-admin/tools.php?page=kalins-pdf-tool

This is the error that I can find in log file on the server, but I’ don’t understand why there is this error.
Thaks.

1. Yeah, I don’t know off the top of my head. Maybe your pages are rather large and the backend just cant handle it. Have you tried not including images? I think I have a timeout set to 30 seconds per post, so if you multiply the number of posts by 30 that’s the maximum number of seconds it’ll take. Anything beyond that and you know something is wrong. It does tend to conk out when it got to around 100 posts for me, though I’m sure that depends on how big or complex the posts are. Let me know if you figure anything out.

2. Hi Kalin, I’ve find where was the error: in cache dir of the pluging there was one aborted process that was con cleared from code.
When I kill and create again that folder the error goes awy.
(Sorry form my english).
Now It’s all ok. Thank you.

3. ehm ‘con cleared’ was ‘not cleared’ :))

24. Alex says:

Hi Kalin,

great work.
Is it possible to give the PDF only registered users?

1. You would have to look at this post: PDF hard code PDF link into theme and then wrap that in a check that only shows the link if the user is registered. However, this would only affect the link to the PDF. The PDF itself would still be accessible if they knew the URL.

25. Great tool!

I am archiving all postings in order to create ebooks for download. This tool saves me a lot of time. It works while I have dinner. Thanks!

Best, GP

26. Tom says:

Hi,
thx for the plugin. I have two questions
1. how can I delete the page between toc and the other posts/pages?
2. how to float the text around an image?
Thanks

1. I think that to delete that page you would need to hack the source. I can’t quite remember if I’m injecting that page on purpose or maybe it’s built-in to the TCPDF rendering engine, or if it’s because your TOC is exactly one page long and it interprets a blank line as a new page.

As for image floats, this is something that frustrated the hell out of me too. Maybe TCPDF has come out with some upgrades in the last year or two that could make this happen.

(If anyone notices improvements by swapping out newer versions of TCPDF please let me know and I might take the time to do an update to this plugin.)

Sorry I couldn’t be more help
Oh, and sorry I took so long to reply. It looks like this got lost in my email for a while.

27. Hi,

How do I make changes in the CSS of h1, h2 and h3??? where are they located I need bigger headings in the pdf

1. You have to use inline CSS in the before HTML section and just code it by hand. I don’t think it’ll be able to link out to any external stylesheets. Sorry I don’t really have any templates or anything.

28. Hi Kalin,

Will this plugin work for WP 3.2.1 ? I have a requirement in which , any PDF which is given for download, needs to be edited on the fly such that the logged in user’s username and other details be printed in the last page and then given for download.

Is there a way to achieve this ?

Sanu

1. I’m still using it on the most recent WordPress update and I haven’t heard any complaints. I assume if it didn’t work I’d be hearing about it
As far as users details and what not, no it doesn’t sound like you can do that directly through the interface, but it might not be too hard to hack the source and get it to work if you know PHP. You’d just have to turn off the caching of the PDF’s and then find where it’s inserting the final page and add in the information you need.

29. Terrence says:

Hey there,

First off, this is a great plugin. But here’s an issue I’m having. I use some custom shortcodes, like [modal]A modal link{/modal], etc. Obviously, I don’t want the [modal] showing up in the generated pdf. Is there a setting I can use that will stop that from happening?

I noticed that the SVN version of the plugin sounds like it includes a regex filter. Maybe that would do the job?

Thanks for your work on this. My boss is going to be really happy when I show him

1. Did you try checking, “Run other plugin shortcodes” in the admin page? Yes, I am using regex to find the internal plugin shortcodes, but that checkbox should turn on shortcodes from other plugins.

1. Terrence says:

Hi Kalin,

I’ve tried that checkbox, following the advice you gave to others, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

One issue might be that the shortcodes I am using are not implemented as part of a plugin. I just directly register them in a php file I include as part of my theme’s header.php.

This may not be standard WordPress practice, or even good WordPress practice! But I’m coming at WordPress as a PHP programmer used to working in a more flexible framework, so it made sense (at the time) just to register my shortcodes in the easiest place, without making use of the plugin architecture WordPress may provide.

Would the fact that I register my shortcodes in this way have something to do with what’s going on?

2. Yeah, that’s probably the issue. There was some specific built-in WordPress call that I was making to trigger all plugins to run their shortcode functions. If your shortcode processing was somewhere else then it most likely wouldn’t be running.
I’d recommend one of two things:
1) You could simply copy-paste the code you already have into my plugin source at the appropriate place. I don’t plan on updating the plugin any time soon unless a new WordPress release causes bugs.
2) You could turn your shortcode processing into a plugin. This is probably the better solution in the long run as it’s going to reduce potential conflicts in the future. I found the WordPress plugin architecture actually pretty easy to work with as long as you remember the documentation is not always correct the details

3. Terrence says:

Hi Kalin,

I moved things over to a very simple plugin — what do you know! It worked great!

Thanks for the advice. Just wanted to let you know.

4. Sweet, great to hear it. The WordPress architecture I found to be pretty well designed compared to many other systems I’ve worked in.

30. Hello,

I am getting this error for few documents

{“fileName”:”creating-a-class-museum.pdf”,”date”:”2012-04-18 06:32:57″,”status”:”problem creating pages and posts. Perhaps there’s a problem with one of the pages you’ve selected or with the before or after HTML.”}

1. That’s an error that I’m spitting out. It probably means that the TCPDF engine couldn’t interpret your HTML. If I remember correctly, the engine requires reasonably well-formatted code. I’d recommend running the pages through a syntax checker and see if you have any HTML errors that the browser might be forgiving about but stricter interpreters will blow up on.

31. Hello,

I am getting too much extra spacing in my few post pdf documents what could be the possible reason

1. Usually extra whitespace I’ve seen as a result of images and TCPDF not handling them quite properly. I haven’t found a good solution other than turning images off. Otherwise you may have some issues with your HTML. Or I think in a few occasions it’ll skip a whole page if the previous post just happens to end right on the last line of the previous page.

1. I had turned the images off, but still I am getting too much extra space, What could be the possible reason now???

2. I don’t know. You’ll have to be more specific, like where in the page is the spacing having a problem and how are you expecting it to look? Is it on single posts or only when you compile multiple posts? Is it between posts, between paragraphs or between the header and the content? Does it happen on a few pages or all of them? Can you link to one of the generated PDF’s and its corresponding blog post(s) so I can take a look?

3. It usually comes randomly between paragraphs and in single posts

32. Hello, thanks for the plugin.
My question is how can I use a template tag to place the link on a page?
For example, I need to place it on a custom taxonomy template.
Thanks!

1. Thanks for answering. It works! even for CPT

33. Hi everyone,

I am using this plugin to print pdf online, but the problem I am getting is that each post has an image in the custom field how can I get that printed in the pdf verison as well

1. Do you use thesis?

1. u mean thesis theme? no

2. I use the Thesis theme, so I use this code for add my image custom field:

“thesis_post_image” is my custom field. May be works at your site too.

3. If it’s just the url in a custom field you would use the shortcode [post_meta name=”custom_field_name”] and wrap it in an image tag. Let me know if that works for you.

1. Can you please translate in English

34. I really love this plugin’s features and customizability! One question: footnotes generated through the wp-footnotes plugin don’t seem to appear in the PDF that results. I would really like to use this plugin, because it can be customized to display really everything we want to display; but, without the footnotes, the posts are incomplete. Any ideas? Here’s the site at issue. Thanks!

1. Do you have “and content filters” checked in the admin? That should theoretically set it so other plugins run their filters on the content before building the PDF, though obviously with all the inconsistencies in plugins, it isn’t going to work for everything.

1. Yeah, that’s been an issue. Probably the most annoying bug I had when developing this and I never did figure it out. It usually would insert an extra page after an image, but did it inconsistently. I think it’s an issue with the TCPDF engine and the way it interprets the HTML. You could try updating the TCPDF source that comes with the plugin as it’s probably been upgraded since my last release. Maybe they fixed this. You should just be able to drop a new version into the same directory as I didn’t alter anything in the engine.
You could also try playing with some of the HTML near the end of the post or in the plugin output if that’s what it’s trying to render. Maybe there’s some extra line breaks or something. If you figure anything out, please let me know as I’d love to get this fixed.

1. Sweet, thanks. Hopefully that will be some use to people. Makes me wish I had a more comprehensive user manual to include this kind of info

35. Hi, Kalin!

Your plugin is the most elegant PDF creation ever!

But I’m using the Thesis theme and the post images are a custom field. They aren’t displayed at the PDF.

Can I fix this issue?

1. Yeah, if the theme doesn’t use the built-in featured image wordpress feature, the [post_thumb] shortcode doesn’t work. You might be able to get it to work if you use the [post_meta name=”custom_field_name”] shortcode which will give you the custom field you specify. Hopefully that would give you an image URL which you can wrap in an image tag.

1. works fine!

Thanks a lot, Kalin!

hey, your plugin is really useful. Its bad that you don’t get much from donations but you made small contribution for future programmers to write open source code
Anyway i installed this plugin but can’t see first tab “select pages and posts”
could you help me how to activate that?

1. Hi thanks for trying it out. Sorry I’m not familiar with the issue you’re seeing. Could be a bug only you are seeing and if so I can put some time into fixing it but ill need some more info. A screenshot would help a lot. It could also be that you’re looking at the settings page when you want to be looking at the tools page. This plugin adds two different admin pages.

37. Heath says:

Hi,

I am looking for some guidance on a slightly different direction of your plugin. I need to have a form on a website (say company information) that automatically fills out and generates a pre-made pdf (say with company logo and product information).

An example of what I am trying to do is here:

However, I don’t want to use flash or any of that.

Is there anyway to accomplish this task with your plugin, or do you think you would be able to help develop something? I’d be happy to pay for your time.

Thanks

1. Hi, sorry my reply took so long. My email box kinda got overflowed Anyway, sorry I can’t really help you out with this myself, as I already work too much at my regular job. It does seem like you should be able to hack the plugin, pull the forms out of the admin pages and pop them into a user facing page, but it would take a bit of hacking. Let me know if you come up with anything.

38. Felixius says:

Hi there Kalin,

You have a great plugin and the makings of an indespensible one!

Are you currently developing or are you ‘on a break’ from dev?

Cheers!

Felixius

1. Yeah, I’ve pretty much quit all forward development on my WordPress plugins, unless I find something new I want to add for my own website. I have been trying to provide support for them and will need to keep them updated as new WP versions come out, but for the most part I’m done with them.

I kinda decided that for my coding projects I’m doing on my own time, I should be doing something that can eventually make me a little money. I think I’ve had maybe two people donate twenty bucks so far for all my WP plugins combined.

Right now I’m working on a FaceBook word comedy game… well, I was working on it but I’m kinda caught up with my job in porn at the moment so I’m taking a break from that as well.
…actually …to be honest, I kinda built these WP plugins at my last job when they had nothing for me to do, so I did in a way get paid to build them My new job, however, expects me to actually work on their projects all day long.

39. Bonjour,
Merci d´avoir me répond, j´ai pas encore commence d´utilise votre PDF
Cordialement.

1. If I understand correctly after running your message through a translator, you’re looking for info on special character sets, specifically N’KO characters. I’m not sure how well it’ll work for you but all the information I have on this is in this post: using foreign characters sets. You may need to update the version of TCPDF and run through their character set documentation.

40. Hi Kalin,

Can you please explain better how I can have the featured image appear in the pdf. Is it possible to arrange the photo galleries to appear in the pdf ?
Thanks

1. Use [post_thumb], which outputs the url of the featured image. Just wrap that in an image tag. Remember the featured image must be specifically set on the edit page of the post. It doesn’t just grab an image out of the post.

41. Bonjour,

Hi Kalin. Is there anyway to get the FEATURED IMAGE to show up on a Post generated PDF? Thanks.

1. Yes, you use [post_thumb], which outputs the url of the featured image. Just wrap that in an image tag.

43. I have followed the procedure you descripted here (http://kalinbooks.com/2010/foreign-characters-pdf-creation-station/).

But I have a problem with the files in the tcpdf folder. I want to chance the fonts cause I use different characters that disappear when converting the html to pdf, but all files in the tcpdf is set a “inactive”. I tried to deactivate and active the plug-in again, but it didn’t help. How do I active the files in the folder?

1. hmmm…. I’m sorry I’m not really sure what you mean by “inactive”. or “active the files in the folder”. Is your text not showing up because you’re using characters not supported by the fonts?

44. Thanks for this great plugin, Kalin. I haven’t tried all its potentialities but it looks great.
I have a little problem though : my WordPress background is dark, thus my default text color is whitish. I see that your plugin changes the default font color into black anyway, which is perfect as the PDF background is white.
However some paragraphs in my articles are gray (not the default text color) and I see that your plugin leaves those gray. Result : on the PDF document, it’s hardly readable.

Suggestion :
As in the settings there’s a option for the font size, it’d be nice to add an option for the text color.

Meanwhile :
Is there a way so that I could get the whole text in black in the PDF files ? I guess I should add some html code but I have no idea where or how nor which code to write exactly.

I hope you can help because if those gray paragraphs have to remain gray, I won’t be able to use your plugin on the website I’m making, which would be a pitty…

Regards,
Fran

1. Hi Fran, I think what’s probably happening is you’ve got some css in the post content itself that overrides my default text color. I can’t think of a solution off the top of my head, and I’m not all that great with css, so I don’t know if there’s a way to override your embedded css. I wonder if you pulled the color settings out of the post content and put them in separate css files in your theme, then when the pdf creator runs, since it doesn’t have access to your theme, it would simply default to black. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

45. NGC says:

Hi Kalin,
thanks for this wonderfull plugin. Is there a possibility to show not just the content of the page id that is stored in the page id database? Detail: I´m using the template function in wordpress for specific page ids. so, i have the content from the page id that is shown in pdf and the content of the template for specific page id around the “page id content”. So under one page id i have to contents. I think it has something to do with the “Table Of Contents”. I hope you can understand what i mean.

1. Sorry; no, I’m not completely clear on what you’re trying to do, but I have a feeling it can’t be done without hacking the source code. This plugin doesn’t really have any knowledge of the theme or what the theme might be doing with individual posts.

1. NGC says:

ok, i try to aks another way. Is it possible to render the pdf content with header and footer from the whole page? Is there a way to define the start and end point of the code that will be visible in the pdf. I would like to have the whole page in the pdf.

2. By “whole page” I think you’re talking about the page content that comes from your theme, right? Unfortunately the plugin has no knowledge of what the theme is doing. You may be able to copy and paste the HTML from your theme’s pages into the before and after HTML and get something similar. Remember though that the PDF creation engine has a hard time doing complex CSS and formatting type stuff.

46. Cester says:

Hi Kalin,

is it possible to show only one or two categories under the “Select Pages and Posts”-Settings?

I want to list only posts from a special category, because I have so many posts and so I want filter it.

And how can I create the PDF in horizontal format?

Thanks and have a nice day!
Cester

1. Cester says:

I have the solution for horizontal format!
It’s in the tcpdf -> config -> tcpdf_config.php:

Find:
(define (‘PDF_PAGE_ORIENTATION’, ‘P’);

Change:
(define (‘PDF_PAGE_ORIENTATION’, ‘L’);

Now another question:
Can I float the content around a image?

2. Unfortunately no, selecting everything from a given category or tag was a feature I wanted to add but never got around to it.
Thanks for telling us how to go horizontal. I don’t think that info has ever been posted anywhere for this plugin.
Floating text around an image was a frustrating thing that I myself was never able to figure out. Perhaps there is a newer version of TCPDF that can make it easier, but unfortunately I don’t know how to do it.

47. Damian C says:

Hello Kalin,
I’m trying to reduce the space after blockquotes. At the moment there is always a large gap below each blockquote.

in the TCPDF documentation at http://www.tcpdf.org/examples/example_061.phps
it says the following:

REMOVE TAG TOP AND BOTTOM MARGINS

$tagvs = array('p' => array(0 => array('h' => 0, 'n' => 0), 1 => array('h' => 0, 'n' => 0)));$pdf->setHtmlVSpace($tagvs); Since the CSS margin command is not yet implemented on TCPDF, you need to set the spacing of block tags using the following method. Can you tell me where to insert this code and whether I can use it for blockquotes? Much appreciated. Damian 1. You’ll want to add this to kalins_pdf_create.php in the plugin source. I think you will want to change the$pdf var to $objTcpdf. Then, if I understand the situation correctly, you should be able to put it anywhere between where the$objTcpdf var is created and where the pdf is actually built. Let me know if that works.

48. Hi !

Well, what about non latin fonts ? It does not seem to work with arabic… or other languages non latin.

Any way to perform that ?

1. Okay, my apologies but this has been an issue in the past and I stopped forward development on this plugin before coming up with a solid solution for this. However, here’s a blog post I made about how to do it. It does take a little bit of hacking to make it work, and it’s not perfect, but depending on your language and font choice it might get pretty close.

49. Geoffroy says:

Hello Kalin,

First of all, your plugin is just amazing. Thanks a lot for this plugin !! And thank you for taking your time to answer us.

Then i’ve just a quick question. It’s possible to insert a logo in header ? I see that Luis have the same problem than me. I suppose it’s possible especially that i found another plugin (WP Post to PDF) which allows to make it.

Thanks.

1. Hi, sorry it took so long for my response. Unfortunately you can’t put an image in the header through the ui. It’s pretty easy to do if you hack the source, but I never got around to putting in that feature before I stopped development on this.

1. Geoffroy says:

2. schwooba says:

Can you give me an idea of where I would include the code? Maybe an example? Is it in the _pdf_create.php file? Thanks so much!

1. Like which file you’ll need to edit if you want to insert an image in the header? Yeah, it would be in the create.php file… I think. It’s been a while

50. PDFfan says:

Hi Kalin, Thanks for the great plugin! I am wondering if you could let me know how to do the following:

1. [post_author]: This shorcode shows user id (login name), can it be changed to the public name?
2. Table of Content: can we consolidate the posts in categories under their respective category name (like in a real magazine)?
3. Can we make the posts continuously flow and make page break happen naturally? Currently, each post starts a new PDF page, even it ends with a few lines in a page, the next post will still start with a new page. It’s OK for the cover page and the TOC page to have their own page though.

Thank you very much, really appreciate the work.

1. Hi, sorry it took so long to reply.
1) No, sorry. never got around to adding the options for [post_author] I think there may be comments somewhere on my website describing how to change this in the PHP.
3)Yes, there is an option called “automatic page breaks” that you can un-check to make this happen. To the left of the “Include table of contents” checkbox.

1. PDFfan says:

Thank you very much for your reply! Can we get both PDF and HTML version of the newsletter? I tried to find a plugin to generate html newsletter, but could not find any. Your plugin is by far the best, I only wish it could also generate html version.

2. Sorry, no HTML output option. That was in my list of things to do, and it wouldn’t be that hard, but unfortunately I’ve stopped forward development on this project to move onto other things.

51. Julg7 says:

Hi Kalin,
Thanks for the plugin it works great for me !

I would like to know if you have an idea of changes to make it compatible with the multilingual plugin ZdMultilang? In fact for the moment it generates PDF only for the main language of the website i’m working on…

1. No, sorry I’ve kinda stopped forward development on these plugins. I’m just gonna do my best to maintain them and answer questions from now on.

52. Flo says:

Hello,

Really a great plugin, thanks for all the work you have put into it.

I seem to encounter a probem on pages with “images” (maps) generated by XML Google Maps (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/xml-google-maps/). When I uncheck “Include Images”, the maps/elevation charts don’t get displayed at all. When I enable it, I get the following error:
TCPDF ERROR: [Image] Unable to get image: http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=lc&chls=3,0,0&chf=c,ls,90,CCCCCC,0.11111111111111,FFFFFF,0.11111111111111&chxt=x,y&chxl=0:|0%20km|3.3%20km|6.5%20km|9.8%20km|13%20km|1:|700%20m|800%20m|900%20m|1000%20m|1100%20m|1200%20m|1300%20m|1400%20m|1500%20m|1600%20m&chd=s:HHHIMQSWbdegjknqsvz32wurnigbYXWTRQOMLJJJIIHHHHHHHH&chs=400x200&chco=00008B&chtt=Hoehenprofil&chts=555555,12
Any chance to get this working? The link itself displays fine when accessed directly via the browser.

Thanks.

1. Hi, sorry it took so long to respond. Yeah, sometimes TCPDF and images just don’t play nice together, particularly when you’re talking about images coming from other servers and dynamically generated images.

53. Hi Kalin I’ve been using your plugin, and it’s really great, here is a thought on how you can add some css to format the pdf.

you should add some text fields in the administrator panel where the people can write the css for specific content like in header1, 2, 3 or 4 also on tables and in list style, then add on your code a replacement for this lines to add the code the administrator had write.

here’s how it works for me, i add replacement code in the youtube replacement function to replace the simple html code to html with style.

if($convertYoutube == "true"){ $content = ereg_replace("<object(.*)youtube.com/v/(.*)\"(.*)", 'YouTube Video', $content);$content = ereg_replace("<iframe(.*)http://www.youtube.com/embed/(.*)\"(.*)", 'YouTube Video', $content); //the code to replace style$content = ereg_replace('<td style="text-align:', '<td style="border-right: 1px solid #999; text-align: ', $content);$content = ereg_replace("<td", '<td style="border-right: 1px solid #999;" ', $content);$content = ereg_replace('<table', '<table cellpadding="5px" ', $content);$content = ereg_replace('cellpadding="0"', 'cellpadding="5px" ', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", ' ', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace("", '', $content);$content = ereg_replace(" ", '', $content);   }  hope it’ll be useful, greetings and thanks alot for developing this plugin it has saved my life a couple of times L 1. sorry the code break if($convertYoutube == “true”){

$content = ereg_replace(“<object(.*)youtube.com/v/(.*)\"(.*)”, ‘YouTube Video‘,$content);
$content = ereg_replace(“<iframe(.*)http://www.youtube.com/embed/(.*)\"(.*)”, ‘YouTube Video‘,$content);

content = ereg_replace(‘<td style="text-align:', '<td style="border-right: 1px solid #999; text-align: ',content);

$content = ereg_replace("<td", '<td style="border-right: 1px solid #999;" ',$content);

$content = ereg_replace('<table', '”, ‘</table></td></tr></table><div></div>’,$content);

$content = ereg_replace(“<h1>”, ‘<h1 style=”font-weight:normal;”>’,$content);
$content = ereg_replace(“<h2>”, ‘<h2 style=”font-weight:normal;”>’,$content);
$content = ereg_replace(“<h4>”, ‘<h4 style=”font-weight:normal;”>’,$content);

$content = ereg_replace(“<h3>”, ‘<table cellpadding=”1px” cellspacing=”0″ style=”background-color:#999;” width=”100%” border=”0″><tr> <td width=”4px”></td> <td width=”3px”></td> <td width=”99%”><h3 style=”font-weight:normal; font-size:12pt; color:#FFF;”>’,$content);

$content = ereg_replace(“<h4>”, ‘<h4 style=”font-size:12pt”>’,$content);

$content = ereg_replace(“<strong>”, ‘<b>’,$content);
$content = ereg_replace(“</strong>”, ‘</b>’,$content);
$content = ereg_replace(” “, ‘<p></p>’,$content);

}

1. Yeah, that’s some nice customization you’re doing there. Haven’t actually put it in to see how it works, but it looks like you’re totally able to customize the look and formatting of your PDF pages. It might be a cool feature to build into the UI, but sounds like a lot of work.

2. Thanks Kalin, yes the pdf reads it perfectly, and you can make the look of the pdf to looks almost as in your post.

It does look like a lot of job, if i knew more of PHP would be more than happy to help, but there’s still much to learn for me.

Anyway, while it’s been developed, there’s the code and anyone who reads this post can customize their Pdf’s with direct code.

54. Anne says:

Hi Kalin,
Thanks for the great plugin; Is there a way to remove page numbers and the lines on top and bottom of pages? Can I customize those areas?

1. No, sorry, there is no way to customize those areas, beyond the header text using just the plugin’s UI. However, if you want to hack it, you can go into kalins-pdf-create.php and fiddle with the settings that I’m using for the TCPDF engine. It will require learning a little about TCPDF though.

2. yes you can!, i´ve done it on mine, $objTcpdf->SetPrintHeader(false);$objTcpdf->SetPrintFooter(false);

this lines are to remove the header or footer and have to be written on kalins_pdf_create.php somewhere around lines 218 – 220

or search in the tcpdf.php file for –> public function Footer() { function and there you can add some text or change the black line

for example to add some text on the left side of the footer i add

$textofoot = utf8_decode(‘CONFIDENCIAL: La información aqui contenida,es para la evaluación del cliente.’);$this->writeHTML(textofoot); 1. Thomas says: Can anyone help me add a logo/image to the header? I’m not quite sure how to do it from the description above from Luis. Sorry:( 55. Erick says: hello, thank you for this interesting plugin, seems what I need but I added an image to be shown before posts, and it gives me this error: TCPDF ERROR: [Image] Unable to get image: http://….. image path is correct and I can see the image. Can you give me a fix for it. Thanks 1. Yeah, sometimes certain images just don’t seem to play nice with TCPDF. You could try re-uploading the image. Unfortunately sometimes you just need to turn off images to get it to work 2. hi there, well the thing i´ve done to customize my header is to deactivate the header function and to add in the PDF Creation settings on the space that says “HTML to insert before Post” my customized code <table style=”background-color:#999; color:#FFF; border:2px solid #999;” cellspacing=”5px” width:”100%” border=”0″> <tr> <td><img src=”http://www.yourcompleteadress.com.mx/logo.jpg” height=”108″/></td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style=”color:#FFF; font-size:16pt;”>[post_title]</td> <td style=”vertical-align:bottom; text-align:right; font-size:8pt;”>[post_date format=”d”] #elmes# [post_date format=”Y”]<br />México D.F.</td> </tr> </table> but the thing with this header is that it only shows in the first page, (perfect for me) and about the address of the img make sure the direction you wrote it’s fully written About the warnings you are getting, seems that you wrote bad code, in those specific line,s perhaps it’s just a parenthesis or something like that, but that only can be known looking at the complete function between those lines to see whats wrong 56. Hi, I’m sorry, can you give me more information about when and where this error is occurring? Is it on an individual page or in the Tool admin page? Does trying different settings help, like not doing table of contents or images? Does it fail just on certain posts or any? 57. One of my clients wants me to make a form send a pdf attachment to a dynamic recipient upon clicking the submit button. Is there any way to use your plug-in to dynamically generate a pdf upon clicking the submit button? I can make the form attach the pdf with php, but I can’t figure out how to generate the pdf with php. Can you give me some guidance please? Thanks very much. 1. On the tool page it creates the PDF after you click the create button. All you would need to do would be to add some code to email that PDF. The plugin uses the TCPDF engine for PDF generation. 1. Thanks for the feedback, and sorry for not being clear. The pdf needs to contain the form data that the user has just filled out. So it has to be created when clicking the submit button. Is that possible to do? 2. Yeah, of course that’s possible with PHP and TCPDF. My plugin pretty much does it already. It has all the before and after html that it adds to the post content before passing it into TCPDF to create the PDF. I think it adds the step of saving it to the database first, but that’s basically what it’s doing. 58. Fernando says: Yes, that would be very helpful considering we cannot delete them manually. If I re-install the plug-in later it will create new PDFs anyway. By the way, the plug-in is very good – I simply have an issue with the number of plug-ins I have installed so I need to leave out any functionality that is not critical to my site. Many thanks, Fernando. 59. Fernando says: Hi, I installed the PDF creation station and later de-installed it. Unfortunatelly the de-activation and deletion process does not delete the PDF files generated in “kalins-pdf” directory. Now I cannot delete them manually because I am not the owner. Have you got a cleanup procedure to delete the PDFs and the directory from within the plug-in or the deletion process? Many thanks in advance. Regards, Fernando. 1. Yeah, sorry, I decided not to delete the pdfs on deactivation since I figured some people would want to retain them afterward. The ones in the tool page can certainly be deleted easily from that page, but I suppose that would be a good feature to add on the settings page also. 60. Does v3.1 of your plugin allow for the pdf content to include the display out put of other plugins that effect the post – i.e. post-plugin-processing version of the post content. 1. Yeah there should be two options: “run other plugin shortcodes” and “and content filters”. Have you tried it with these options enabled? They’re not perfect because plugins do unexpected things sometimes so I didn’t enable them by default. 1. only seems to process links where the url is within quoatation marks. eg: http://aurl.com * will not be passed as a link in outputted PDF http://aurl.com * will be passed as a link in outputted PDF Any way I can edit your plugin to make non quotationed urls and ” quotationed urls pass as links in the outputted PDF as well as “” ” quotationed urls? 2. Hmm… I’m not really clear on what the issue is. Are you referring to a specific url/linking plugin that you’re using? The two links you showed seem to be identical from what I can see. 3. They weren’t identical when I typed them, your blog parsed the html code and converted them to links. Let me retype it in a manner that won’t be parsed by your blog. only seems to process links where the url is within quoatation marks. eg: href=http://aurl.com * will not be passed as a link in outputted PDF href=”http://aurl.com” * will be passed as a link in outputted PDF Any way I can edit your plugin to make non quotationed urls and ” quotationed urls pass as links in the outputted PDF as well as “” ” quotationed urls? 4. I know “a” way to get around it using an automated search and replace plugin, but it would be better if we find a way to adapt your plugin as that will be bug fix for the next version. Other than that, I think you have done a superb job with the plugin. 5. The open-source TCPDF engine is what actually processes all of the HTML and does the real PDF generation, so my plugin is basically a wrapper and UI for that engine. You could look into their documentation and maybe find something, but my guess is they decided not to support attributes without quotes because it’s not really valid HTML and we want to encourage proper coding practices. Here’s a page discussing this topic: http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/qattr.html. There might also be some browsers or cell phones that aren’t going to display your links properly, so I’d recommend doing the find and replace thing. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. 61. Hi There! Tried to run your tool however I get an error on the page kalins-pdf-tool on line 417, Chr 4, Error: ‘JSON’ is undefined Have looked through your posts but cannot see anything relating to this specific error. Are you able to help? 1. I’m sorry, I don’t know. I haven’t seen this error before and can’t reproduce it. My first guess is you don’t have JSON fully installed in PHP or are running an older version of PHP. That’s just my first guess, though. Can you give me some more details, like which file is throwing this error, when and where you see the error, and possibly some other details about your WordPress setup. Have you tried creating a PDF with other options? like turn off table of contents or images, trying the creation with different settings, because sometimes those individual settings will cause problems with certain post content. Also try it with different posts, as the problem may be caused by some post content or something. 2. I’m having this same problem. tools.php, 416, character 4, syntax error, code 0. I’ve used this plugin every so often for almost a year and only after re-enabling it now does it cause this problem, so the bug must have been introduced with a newer version of WordPress (I last used this around March 2011.) 1. Darn, unfortunately I haven’t been able to reproduce this problem, so I don’t know where to start. If I could figure out what combination of settings, plugins, theme, wordPress/PHP configurations or other things that may be combining to cause this, I’m sure I could get down to it, but until I get more information, sorry, there’s not much I can do. These are by far my least favorite kinds of bugs 2. Hi Guys! I just got an email from WordPress.org about WordPress version 3.2.1 – “there were some issues with the JSON module on some web hosts, which the just-released version 3.2.1 fixes.” Perhaps simply upgrading WordPress to 3.2.1 will fix this for you guys. 62. Jan Fjordside says: Hi Thanks for this great plugin. Im trying to export records from pods wich works nicely – only i would like to have each pod on a seperate page. Was wondering if there is some way of telling you pdf-exporter to to a pagebreak from the pod/post content. Thanks 1. Sorry, the only way currently would be to either put each pod in its own post or hack the plugin code. If you want to try hacking it, you can go into kalins_pdf_create.php. The for loop that begins on line 273 is looping through the list of posts. You would need to first split each post content into its separate pods, then adjust the current loop to loop through the pods instead of posts. You would also need a mechanism for it to remember which post your’e on, so shortcodes and such would still work, but that could be done with a simple check on each loop iteration. Other than that I think the loop could remain pretty much the same as it is now. However, that’s all a moot point if no one on your staff knows PHP, cuz it’s probably slightly too complicated for a novice programmer. 1. Jan Fjordside says: Hi Kalin, Thanks for the fast reply – turned out i could just put this in my pods template: apparently it forces a pagebreak into the tcpdfengine – works for me. thanks again 2. Jan Fjordside says: hmm the code got eaten – trying again… -tcpdf method=”AddPage” /- (replace dashes with arrowbrackets) 3. Oh, wow, that’s awesome. Thanks for letting us know about that little trick. I’m gonna need to add that into the help menus or somewhere. 63. Graham says: Hi Kalin, I’ve tried many pdf plugins and like the flexibility of yours. My challenge is this: my posts contain php coding calling another file to load pages generated from a database (aside from the WordPress database). The pdfs are created ok with headers and titles, but the content of the post is missing. Is there a way to generate the pdf to show the resultant content of the post (after the php in the post has done it’s job) rather than the post itself? Many thanks, Graham 1. If the code is coming through either a shortcode or a filter, then there’s a couple options to turn that ability on and off in the settings/tool pages. Otherwise, right now there’s nothing you can do unless you want to hack the plugin source. I do intend to add a system for PHP injection using another shortcode that mirrors what I’ve done in Kalin’s Post List plugin, but I haven’t gotten around to that yet. 64. Hi, I like the pdf-plugin. But – a problem occured recently: One specific post will be generated correctly via the functionality in ‘tools’. But generating a pdf of the same post via the link (in my case) at the bottom of the post results in an error (‘not found’). So the admin can generate a pdf-version of the post, a user can’t. It seems to be a problem with the specific post, all others seem to work fine. Any idea? Thanks K. Singer 1. Hi, thanks for letting me know. Can you give me any details about the specific post? Is it a filename issue, perhaps, like if you’ve got some special characters or an extra long post slug? Have you tried other options, like un-checking “Use post slug for PDF filename instead of ID”? 1. Hi Kalin, thanks for the hint of un-checking “Use post slug for PDF filename instead of ID”. With this it works fine. The link to the post, which does not work with pdf creation is: http://www.timepatternanalysis.de/Blog/2011/05/07/rohstoff-crash-%e2%80%93-hintergrunde-und-ansteckungsgefahr-fur-aktien/. The Headline is: Rohstoff-Crash – Hintergründe und Ansteckungsgefahr für Aktien Special characters? I didn’t experience any problemes up to now. Probably it has to do with the length (no of characters) – it is the longest (up to now…). More than 64. As said, it works with not using slug. But it would be nice, if can find the cause for the mis-behaviour one day. Thank you again – it is a really good plugin. Klaus 65. Danielle says: Hello, Thanks for the plugin. Is there a way to modify the size of the PDFs? Thanks? 1. I’m assuming you mean size as in the width of the page? If you can write a little PHP code and want to delve into the TCPDF engine, you could modify some stuff and probably adjust sizing. There’s some settings that start around line 200 in kalins_pdf_create.php for things like page orientation, image ratio, footer size, etc. There’s probably some others that you can find on tcpdf.org. It seems like they’d have some way to easily set the size. 1. Danielle says: Hello, Yes, I meant width and height. I need size A5 for my site as I want to deliver some ecards via PDF. I checked in kalins_pdf_create.php around line 200 and there are no specific size input. Also, I am no coder or developer, so I would be lost trying to work with TCPDF. Thanks for the reply anyway; I will just have to use the standard A4. And congratulations for the plugin; it’s the best of all, imho. 66. While trying to plug the PDF Creation Station with another extension, I got some errors that I solved by adding wp_reset_query(), in kalins_pdf_create.php, just after the query_posts and the content processing. I guess it’s necessary to prevent the main loop being permanently altered 1. Hi thanks, I’ll look into this whenever I can get some good time for development. 67. Hi ! I use this gooooood plugin but there is an issue with custom fields : they are not included in pdf, even if thez are displayed on the post. Is there any way to have the whole post in pdf including the custom fields content ? Thanks ! 1. oups sorry saw a comment about it. Ok will wait ! 2. Yeah, the [post_meta name=”field_name”] shortcode should be available now, as of version 3.0. You use it like the other shortcodes to show the value of the field. The ‘name’ parameter is required. 68. Why this error happens? “Call to undefined function wp_get_current_user()…” BUG Thank’s & regards 1. Sorry, I’m not really sure. It’s tricky to modify the kalins_pdf_create.php file because it seems to be running in a different space, I think since it’s being called directly from a link and the standard WordPress stuff is skipped. I’m not totally clear on how it works. I wrote this plugin to help me learn PHP and WordPress so it’s still a process for me. If you notice near the top of the file, I’m doing a require_once of wp-config.php. Perhaps there needs to be another WordPress file or two imported to give you access to the function. The other thing you could do is modify the call to the page and pass in the current user on the URL params. Anyway, good luck. Let me know if you come up with anything cool. 1. Z3R0N3 says: Hi, I finally followed your directions and have spent the URL value. Now the problem is to delete the old one .pdf for the new. I want to use unlink(); Here Thanks and Salu2 2. It looks like the location you’re using to check for the existence of the file is different from the call you’re making to unlink. if (file_exists (pdfDir. $fileName)) {if (! isset ($ skipReturn)) {unlink ('wp-content/uploads/kalins-pdf/singles /'. $fileName);} return;} You’re using$pdfDir .$fileName in file_exists and a string in unlink. My first guess is that the two values don’t match. Have you tried doing this: if (file_exists ($ pdfDir. $fileName)) {if (! isset ($ skipReturn)) {unlink ($pdfDir.$fileName);} return;}

3. Z3R0N3 says:

Good and delete the file! Thanks kalin, the truth is that I tried it and did not work. I could swear I did well! but now it works: D.

Thanks, I can only correct a small error. Once you click the link the file.pdf clear them, the screen goes blank (obviously as it tries to display or load).

I have to re-click the link to generate it again and it shows.

Could you put a “return;” so that after removing rebuild the document and display it?

4. Anonymous says:

Thanks kalin your code finally worked!

Now I can delete the files, the problem is that I have to click 2 times the link “href”to call a function to generate the new file.pdf

The first time you delete the file and obviously the screen appears blank or displays “page not found”

And the second time since I generated the new document and I can see perfectly.

I try to do something like this:

if(!isset($skipReturn)){ unlink($pdfDir. $fileName); return kalinsPDF_createPDFDir(); header(“Location: ” .$pdfURL .$fileName); } But does the same thing. 2 times I have to click the link. Thanks again and Regards. 5. Z3R0N3 says: ok all sorted and running! What I did was as simple as removing the IF and let the code run normal … Thanks again and thanks for your work with the control, is very good and I have been very helpful! 6. Cool, glad to hear it. 69. Ian says: Hi, I am trying out the plug-in on on my site. Here is a demo page that it’s on: http://robinscatering.ca/wordpress/?page_id=107 . The PDF link is at the bottom of the page. I am getting this error though: TCPDF ERROR: Unable to create output file: /var/www/vhosts/robinscatering.ca/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/kalins-pdf/singles/hot-compliments.pdf I saw mention of the same error earlier in the comments, but I don’t have the option enabled that was giving them issues. 1. Ian says: p.s. I also don’t see a “kalins-pdf/singles” directory in the FTP, only “kalins-pdf”. I tried to create a ‘singles’ directory in that folder, but it won’t let me. I tried changing permissions to 777 to see if it would do anything as well, and it didn’t. 1. Ian says: Ok an update I erased the kalins-pdf folder, made a new one, and made a singles folder inside it. It would still not work at that point. I had to change the kalins-pdf folder to 777 permissions from 755 to get it to work. It now seems to be functioning fine. 2. Hi Ian, thanks for telling us what happened in case it happens to someone else. Unfortunately I’m still a bit of a novice when it comes to server configuration and permissions stuff. 2. Ian says: Ya I was posting in case it helps anyone else out. It could be issues with the hosting I am using as well. I have had some permissions errors with other plug-ins with the host as well. Sometime I will test it on a site that doesn’t use that host and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the great plug-in. 70. Hi, 3.0 is installed in WP 3.1 and regardless of whether the include images box is checked, I don’t get any images in the pdf. Only links to the images. Also, if I click the create now button, only a white box pops up with nothing in it. I have to refresh to get rid of it. The create link does work. That’s using the current Firefox browser. Safari does produce the box correctly. But still no images. Any ideas? Thanks! 1. Hey, thanks for pointing out the Firefox bug. I’ll try to look into that sometime soon. As for the images, I haven’t seen that before. Can you send a sample post/image or a link to one of the pages that’s doing this? These images aren’t coming from another domain are they? 2. With version 3.1 I fixed the firefox bug. (The Jquery dialog animation just didn’t work in FF,so I turned it off) I also, per your other comment, changed the PDF font to Times from the ugly sans-serif font it was before. I think that improves the appearance. Also upped the default font size to 12, which I think is more appropriate. I’ll need more info to debug your image issue, since I can’t reproduce the problem on my local or live sites. 1. Howdy! Thanks for the work. The firefox bug is indeed fixed. However…there’s always a however isn’t there :-)…the popup let’s me move things around as intended but only the last two pages get pdf’d. I had selected about 9 pages and then reordered them. Also, the create link produced the same result. How about you send me an email and I’ll reply with access to my dashboard so you can reproduce the problem. 3. Hi there. I experience the same issue with the images as Don does. 1 month ago with the previous version i got a nice pdf including the images but now it’s text only. 1. Hi Again, I think i’ve solved it….. I just unchecked the option: Automatic page breaks And generated a new pdf, which did include images Hope my feedback is of any use? Regards, Rick 2. unchecked page breaks, huh? Yeah, thanks for letting me know. I’ll have to look into that. I figured it was the issue with needing to check ‘run other plugin shortcodes’ for images that are inside caption shortcodes. 71. Pierpaolo says: Hi! is it possible to download the 2.0.2 version? I wanted to try the upgrade to the new version, but first I need the original 2.0.2 version because I do not remember which modifications I have done. 1. Pierpaolo says: I surely will, thanks! 72. Niyi says: Dear Kalin, I am new to wordpress and have really found you plugin as a good one, my question is How can i use an image to create a pdf icon on all my pages on the website. 1. On the Creation Station settings page in your admin, go down to the text field labeled “Link text”. Put in this code: <img src="image url" alt="image description" /> and just change the src param to your image url and change or delete the image description and you should be good to go. The link should get wrapped around whatever you put in the “Link text” field. 73. Hi, Your plugin is really great!! Is it possible provide a link like kalins_pdf_create.php?multipost=yes&post1=po_1418&post2=po_1419&post3=po_1420. I would like to provide a link to export 10 posts within one PDF. I would not provide your Tool to the end-users… Perhaps its useful to split my requirement into 2 links “refresh PDF” and “download PDF” – or is it possible to use a cronjob the generate a PDF with articles in a defined order? Regards Erich 1. No, sorry, at this time there’s no way to automatically generate multiple-post PDF files. All multiple-post PDF’s have to be created through the tool page and won’t automatically re-generate. I want to create something that can auto-generate a PDF of all posts in a category/parent page/tag, but I still can’t think of a good way to do the user interface for it. If you have any ideas, feel free to suggest ways I could go about it. I suppose you could experiment with a cron job that calls the creation script, or implement your own post update hook or something, then link directly to the PDF. Let me know if you come up with anything cool. 74. webschnecke says: Hi, I need help. This Plugin is WUNDERFUL …. but…. I need all my customfields, generated with magic-fields, in the output in the PDF. How can I do this. Is it possible to include PHP in the HTML-Box? Thanks for helping me. 1. webschnecke says: like this… php the_category (‘, ‘); php deluxe_logo (); php echo get (‘adress’) ; 1. Please explain where to place these codes?? THX! 2. Sorry Hans, I think webschnecke was just using those functions as examples of what he’d like to be able to do. I don’t currently have any way for a regular user to inject PHP as the PDF is being created. The only way you could do it would be to get down and dirty with the plugin’s source files and figure something out. If you do that, let me know ’cause I’m curious. As for custom fields, I’ll be releasing version 3.0 either tonight or tomorrow, and it will include a new post_meta shortcode. 2. No, it’s not possible to include PHP. I fear allowing that would open a security hole, but I may look into it in the future. As for custom fields, I have been meaning to add a shortcode for that like this: [post_meta name=””], but haven’t gotten around to it yet. 75. randell Brantley says: Hello Kalin I have been trying to combine a LaTeX plugin with a PDF generating plugin on posts on an XAMPP installation of wordpress. I like your plugin put with the “Run other plugin shortcodes ” option checked and using WP-LaTeX it generated the error: TCPDF ERROR: [Image] No such file or directory in ‘http://s.wordpress.com/latex.php?latex=\displaystyle\frac{x+y}{y-z}{x+y^2}&bg=ffffff&fg=000000&s=3’%20alt=’\\displaystyle\\frac{x%20y}{y-z}{x%20y^2}’%20title=’\\displaystyle\\frac{x%20y}{y-z}{x%20y^2}’%20class=’latex’%20/ With the LaTeX for WordPress the short code was displayed in the PDF instead of the equations. I tried a few other PDF generators and PDF24 Article worked with WP-LaTeX but it is not as nice as your plugin. I would be very greatful if you can suggest a way to make your plugin work with WP-Latex 1. Okay, I will try to look into this, though it probably won’t be real soon, as I’ve come down with a bug and don’t feel like doing anything right now Unfortunately, the other-plugin shortcodes feature isn’t currently foolproof. 1. Randell Brantley says: Thanks for the reply. I hope you get over your bug soon and in time fix the bug in your plugin. 76. Ian says: Hi there. I have been testing a few PDF creation plugins, and I prefer the interface and setup of yours by far. The problem is it won’t seem to generate a PDF on my posts. It creates the link fine, the ink just brings up a white page though. The posts on the site contain only a large JPG image. Other plug-ins can create a PDF from the posts though, I just don’t like the interfaces or how they go about it. Can this plug-in work with a post like that? sample: http://www.technicor.ca/tech-tip-november-2010 I know it’s an odd setup, but this is how the client sets up their site. I am just looking for a solution that allows the user to create a PDF from these posts. Thanks for any help. 1. Thanks so much for posting. I followed your link and downloaded your image, put it in a test page and hey, it’s not working for me either. That’s good, cuz generally speaking, a bug I can reproduce is a bug I can squash. There’s no telling how long it’ll take me, though, since I’ve got a nasty cold and am feeling lazy 1. Ian says: Thanks for looking into it. The only other info I can give you is that a couple of other plug-ins I tried could process the posts into PDF’s. All the posts are the same, and just contain a single JPG image. Your plug-in is so much better in the way it produces the PDF though (no ‘processing’ window/popup or any other steps… you just click and the PDF opens) and so much easier to setup. I will watch for updates, and thanks for looking into it. 77. Hello Kalin, I’m using your addon and very happy with it but I need a little help. My website is in Turkish, so I’d like to change the “Page” word at the bottom of the PDF pages (like”Page 1/5″, “Page 5/5″) to “Sayfa” (which means Page in Turkish) I couldn’t find the place in your PHP files.. Can you give a hand for this? /salute 1. still no answer… Kalin? 2. Ah, yes, sorry, I had so many other comments today that yours got lost. I was gonna look into this a bit more in the next few days so I can give you a more specific answer, but basically you’ll need to make a change to the TCPDF engine that runs the PDF generation. There is hopefully some instructions on the TCPDF docs/forums for doing stuff like this. 1. Ok, I’ll keep searching to find my way going to forums and docs again 2. I still couldn’t find a solution for this problem Can you show me the way? 1. Hi, I’m really sorry but I’ve been very sick the last couple weeks and just don’t feel like doing much of anything, so it’s gonna be a little while before I get around to looking into the comments that have been building up. 3. Okay, here’s how you change the word ‘Page’ to whatever you want. Open up kalins_pdf_create.php in the plugin folder and find where it says $objTcpdf->setLanguageArray($l); and just above that line, add this line: $l['w_page'] = 'Sayfa';`

I’ve tested this with the newest version of TCPDF, but not with the version that’s included in this plugin. If this doesn’t work, you may want to download the newest TCPDF package and replace the one in the plugin.

78. Anonymous says:

Hi – love the plugin. One problem though – on my work (school) blog where we have a bought theme (striking theme) it doesn’t work! It works fine for my personal blog at primarypete.net but not on wldps.com. Any help much appreciated!!

1. So when you say it doesn’t work do you mean it won’t apply a link to your pages or do you mean the tool page won’t create a PDF or do you mean it won’t install properly? Can you tell me any differences you may have between the two sites? They’re both running the same version of WordPress and PHP? Any plugin differences? I’m sorry, but these kind of problems are very difficult for me to figure out because I can’t reproduce the problem in my development environment. Any info you could give would probably help. Thanks.

79. This is a great post! Thank you so much for writing it! I’ve already installed it on my site and my dad’s site, which is an online community of writers who regularly publish anthologies. Stay tuned for a write up!

1. Hey, thanks a bunch. I’m glad you like it.

80. Hi

This is a great plugin and works well.

One thing I thought could improve the plugin:

When creating pdfs, it would be nice if the posts could be listed categorywise, making it easy to select the posts we want in the pdf.

Otherwise, an excellent plugin.

1. Yeah, I am hoping to add a feature to choose the display order of posts, though it’s a bit complex, so probably won’t be going into version 2.0 which I should hopefully release soon. Maybe in 2.1.

1. Swaminathan says:

I am getting more and more impressed with the plugin.

I find this to be better than Anthologize, though Anthologize creates a Table of Contents on its own.

If this feature can also be included, you have a great plugin.

Also, when we convert youtube videos on the post, the plugin converts this as a text link. If it can pull a thumbnail of the video and add a text link below it, it would be awesome in the PDF output.

2. Swaminathan says:

Oops, just noticed another thing – if a post has content on it using a shortcode, the plugin doesn’t pull the short code content. It pulls in only the image and heading line and puts a link on it to the post itself.

Is it too much work to make it parse the output content itself, with links, images and all?

3. Yes, a table of contents feature is on my to-do list for this plugin, though I don’t yet know how I’m going to do it with TCPDF, nor when I will find time (currently working on V 2.0 of Kalin’s Post List.

With V 2.0 of Creation Station I added a checkbox that says “Run other plugin shortcodes”. If checked, posts with shortcodes should have those codes properly converted. If not checked, the shortcodes are removed. However, obviously I couldn’t test this with even a small percentage of the plugins out there. If there’s a specific plugin that’s not working with this, let me know and I’ll see if I can’t figure out the problem.

81. Hello,

I like the idea of the plugin, but I can’t make it produce a pdf.

I go to Tools > PDF Creation Station and select all my posts. Then I go to “Create PDF!” an push the Create PDF button, and get the pop-up and select create pdf once more…

Then the pop-up closes and I see a text:

“Building PDF file. Wait time will depend on the length of the document, image complexity and current server load. Refreshing the page or navigating away will cancel the build.”

and I wait, but nothing happens after that. I don’t get any error messages or anything.

Thank you

1. Yeah, I apologize. It does that sometimes when you’re building a PDF of more than a couple hundred pages. I think it has to do with the server’s processor load, though I’m not certain, and I’m not sure how to find out. Try compiling just a few posts into a PDF and see if that works. If so, try again later with the entire site and hopefully you can catch the server when it’s not too bogged down. Also, it may take a couple minutes to build. I know there’s not good user feedback on that in the UI, but just be patient. Let me know if it works for you.

1. Hi Kalin,

Thanks for your answer. It works perfectly when I choose a couple of post. So I’ll just break it down to smaller file.

Thanks

82. Hi Kalin
Thanks for this great plugin, was just perfect and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you, you did a great job!!!

Since I am using NextGen Gallery, I do not have images included in the posts, but links to NextGen Galleries (e.g. tag called ‘[nggallery id=34]’) . It is possible to export those galleries/images in the same way to the pdf?

1. I’ve never used ng gallery, but it looks like they’re using a simple shortcode. I have other-plugin shortcode support listed in my list of possible future features (Option to Run Other Plugin Functions on Content Before Compiling). I’m currently working on version 2.0 of this plugin and will perhaps add this feature when I release that in a month or two, but I can’t make any promises.

1. That sounds great. I’ll keep on waiting
Thanks!!!

83. Is it possible to create PDF’s out of custom posts rather than default ones?

1. Hmmm… I haven’t worked with custom posts before, so if they aren’t working in the plugin, my guess is no, as I’ve currently coded it, you’re probably stuck with just pages and posts. But I’ll add custom post support to my to-do list, as it seems like it would be a pretty nice feature to have.

1. Cool that’d be great

2. I just started looking into this and noticed that on custom post types, the link is added to the page and the PDF is properly generated. It’s just on the tool page for creating large compilations where it’s just pages and posts. I’m working on remedying that now for version 2.0.

84. Dear Kalin,
I just tested your Plugin. Its what I’ve been looking for since ages!!
As my homepage runs out (I wont pay another year as it was just ment for my trip) I’d like to export the whole Blog.

There is one thing I’m missing: Before you create the pdf there is the possibility to choose the order of posts. As I want to export everyhing the blog is upside down, last entry on top.
A “sorty by” (-Date – Name -wahtsoever) function would be really nice here

Secondly I noticed that the quality of pictures will be reduced? Is that becuase it’s a pdf?

1. Hi Michael, thanks for trying out my plugin

Hmmm… yeah, an order-by option would be kinda nice, though I’ll have to think of a good way to implement it and see if it’s worth it, as it might get kinda complex. not sure if I should put it in the popup or on the main page where the posts are listed.

As far as the images, I haven’t noticed any quality degradation myself, though perhaps that’s because I haven’t tested with high-res images, or maybe I just overlooked it. I will try to look into that, but I’m pretty busy at the moment and probably won’t be able to get to either of these things for a couple weeks or longer

1. It’s not trying out…it’s working with it
A helpfull plugin is always welcome!

I guess putting it on the main page will be easier thant creating a drop down. But both ways would be handy.

The pictures were take with 8mp and then reduced to the resolution 800×600 with irfan view as I had to upload them with a prepaid internet stick (from Australia).
In the blog they are displayed with 300×255 or similiar.

As you time is a bit limited at the moment and my time runs out…I’m going to export them the hard way…Ctrl+C -V into Word so I can create my booklet. Well when I’m old I will thank my self for the effort of saving this memories

85. Jc says:

Hi Kalin, thanks for a great plugin – I just have one request, is it possible to save the pdf with the actual post title rather than number?

1. Yeah, I was thinking of doing that originally, but I believe that it is possible in WordPress to make two or more posts with the same title, and I think even with the same slug name, so I decided to go with ID numbers to guarantee that there won’t be any conflicts. I could be wrong about that though. What I might be able to do is make it an option, so you can choose IDs or slugs for the PDF filenames, and leave it up to the admin to ensure there’s no conflicts. I am currently working on my next plugin, Kalin’s Post List, which I plan on finishing in the next few weeks, though I keep running into delays. After I finish that there’s a couple little features I want to add to PDF Creation Station, and I will look into slug-based filenames at that time.

2. In version 1.2 I added this feature, so PDF filenames by post slug is now the default. It turns out that WordPress forces all page/post slugs to be unique, so conflicts shouldn’t be a problem. However, you can still choose to have them built based on ID numbers.

86. I do not see the link for pdf after saving options in the posts, only in the pages (creating multiple pages pdf works) ?

1. Hmmm… that could be a couple different things. If the pages are longer than the posts, perhaps you have the “Minimum post character count” set to something that’s higher than the count on the posts but not on the pages. Images or other markup in the page could be making that character count inaccurate as well. Try setting it to 0 and see if that fixes it. (Now that I look at it, I completely forgot to put in a note stating that setting the character count to 0 gives it no limit).
It could also be that you’ve got the “create pdf of this page” setting on the page/post edit screen set to override your default settings.
It’s also possible, if you downloaded this plugin a while ago, that something got screwed up during the upgrade in your page/post metadata since I added the character count and “use default” features in a recent upgrade. If it comes to this, try deactivating the plugin, making sure that you have the “Upon plugin deactivation clean up all database entries” option checked near the bottom of the settings page and then reactivate.
If none of that works, let me know and I’ll try to think of something else.

1. OK, you are right. I did not notice the character count feature. And as I installed it on a test blog with small posts… Sorry.

2. Cool beans. Guess my response was a little overkill

87. Hello Kalin,
thanks for great plugin.
i am using your plugin at my website but i have Turkish character displaying problem at pdf file.
i am using UTF-8 Encoding for standards and Turkish characters ( ğüşçöı) is displaying correct at my browser and printer but if i make pdf file, theese characters is not displaying correct.
please let me know how can i set language / character set of pdf file!

1. Okay, I am looking into this. It appears that TCPDF has support for different languages, but I can’t seem to find any documentation on it. Give me a day or two to see if I can figure anything out.

2. Okay, I was able to figure something out for you and made a blog post about it. It requires a little adjustment in the plugin code to set a new font. I got it working with your list of characters, and some text I copied from your site so if you have any trouble, let me know and I can send you the exact files I used.

88. Thanks for the prompt reply Kalin,
No need to feel sorry, I was just curious because this plugin sounds so promising.
I tried to use the ‘Make PDF Newspaper’ and ‘news2paper’ plugins in WordPress in the past but they are not very flexible, if they work. I have them installed but de-activated now.
I don’t know if anything else is using jquery and I have a number of plugins on the blog, including ‘Google doc embedder’. Can you tell me how to find out about plugins using jquery?
I need to create PDF’s from posts for the blog and stumbled upon your great idea.
Anyway, would be interested to hear if anyone else has this issue. Sorry to cause a stir

1. I updated the plugin in the wordpress.org directory, adding a little link that will allow you to immediately create the PDF file, skipping the popup step. It’s a hacky solution as you won’t be able to re-order the pages, but at least it should work for you. I didn’t update the version number so you’ll need to delete the plugin and reinstall it since it won’t recognize that it needs an update.

But I still want to figure out the real problem. Whatever is happening, it’s something to do with javascript and the client side code or execution. My first thought is that it’s your browser. You’re not using Internet Explorer 6 or something are you? I’ve tested it on most major browsers, but only on fully updated browsers, and was expecting it to totally tank in IE6. Maybe try a different browser on a different system.

If that’s not the problem, maybe try installing this plugin: use-google-libraries, which will force your site to load certain scripts from google instead of your website. That *might* solve the problem if there’s an issue with your jquery or jqueryui in your wordpress installation but it’s still a shot in the dark.

Other than that, I can’t think of anything else I can do until I can somehow reproduce the error on my own system so if anyone else experiences this problem and has some insight, please let me know.

1. Hi Kalin,
I will do as you say and report back the results. In the meantime I can assure you I am not going near IE6 or earlier. I am using Firefox 3.6.10 mainly, but tried it with IE8 and Chrome.
Also I noticed that it takes a little while to load the kalins-pdf-creation-station.php page and only flashes the page/post list screen once (the first time).
I will come back with more when I have more on your suggestions.

2. Hi again Kalin,
I am sorry but I cannot find the “Kalin’s PDF Creation Station” plugin in wordpress.org.
Did you remove it from there? Can you tell me where I can find the modified version?
sorry

3. Oops, duh,

5. Bah! I just noticed that my commit to the repository isn’t working, so I actually did not update the plugin like I said I did. Maybe something is wrong with the WordPress listing system right now. I thought I read someone saying they were in the midst of upgrading it. I think that’s why you can’t find this plugin in the listing, unless you click on ‘newest’ and search for ‘pdf’. When I commit this next time, hopefully tomorrow, I’ll update the version number so we can all tell it’s new.

6. Okay, finally managed to get it updated to v 0.8 with the extra little link.

89. Hi Kalin,
Thanks for the great plugin…

What I cannot find though is the result .pdf
When I press the ‘Create pdf’ button it flashes a panel very quickly listing the posts and then disappears.
I am not sure if this is working or not because I cannot find the result ? Is it stored somewhere or has it failed?

Using WP 3.0.1 and 2010 Weaver theme

1. Yeah, it sounds like something is not working with your jquery or div layering or something. The popup that comes up listing the pages is supposed to allow you to rearrange the pages, then it has a create button at the bottom, but it sounds like somehow it’s not being displayed properly, so you never have the chance to create a PDF. Do you happen to have any plugins that deal with Jquery or are otherwise doing anything special related to jquery or jquery extensions? If not, would you be willing to experiment with installing one of those Jquery plugins that loads Jquery from google’s servers? Has anyone else out there experienced this same problem? I’ll try looking into this and try to guess at any possible reasons why jquery wouldn’t properly display a popup, but I currently can’t reproduce the problem so I don’t know where to start
Sorry bout that.

2. Oh, have you tried using a different browser?
